Cover Crops. . .
Winter time is a slower time for us outside at the farm. Trees are planted and doing great. Our new greenhouse is still being built.
Between solarizing our beds (terminating cover crops and weeds, plants, etc), planting additional rounds of cover crops to replenish the soil nutrients of our beds and planting some winter produce for our restaurant partners, we let the soil for the most part rest and we also take a little rest while planning for the next season (we still have things to do but not as busy). This week we planted a lot of cover crop, in anticipation of the rain tonight, that will last us until we’re ready to plant for spring.
Some upgrades we are making in our grow beds are the installation of drip irrigation and caterpillar tunnels. These two upgrades will allow us to control watering needs a little easier and to protect our produce from wildlife and the cold. This should not only make it easier for us to control what we can, but should also increase efficiency in our workload and the output. We should also be able to extend the grow seasons a little on the front end and back end of the seasons.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
