Heat and Weeds. . .

This week could be described using two words: heat and weeds. The heat and humidity returned this week and it was a rather warm week at the farm. It didn’t take long to break a sweat no matter what you were doing. With really no rain to speak of there was no reprieve from the heat each day. No fun.

In addition to the heat we had weeds. And lots of them. Out of our 67 grow beds we really only utilized around 40 this summer. The others were taken over by Chester County weeds. For those of you in Chester County; I need not say anything else. You know what we’re battling. We were able to begin turning beds from weeds into soil again where we’ve begun planting cover crops to nourish our soil.

Cover crops, you ask? Essentially we’re planting seeds that are grain based to help aide in erosion control, weed suppression, soil improvement, and an end goal of putting nitrogen back into the soil. This will essentially serve as fertilizer and nutrients for whatever we plant in the beds next.

Thankfully we were able to visit our friends at The Country Carrot and Good Life Organic Kitchen with fresh produce. We also delivered some wonderful looking patty pan squash and tomatoes to our friends at the Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen.

Have a great weekend!
