Ups and Downs. . .
Farming has ups and downs. Things, some weeks, go the way we want. The next week can be a struggle. We’ve pushed out a lot of lettuce over the last 3 weeks. This week - we honestly didn’t get very much out.
We have noticed over the past 2 weeks that our heads of lettuce haven’t been quite as big as we wanted. We test for nitrates pretty regularly and they have been down recently. There’s no real reason why. Not that we can pinpoint. We can make educated guesses and assumptions but the honest truth is that we don’t know.
So this week we added an extra reactor. We now have two. These reactors are nothing more than 250 gallon tanks with media (plastic surface area) that allow for the good bacteria more surface area to attach too allowing for us to capture the beneficial benefits. Not only do we have this media but we also have multiple air pumps pushing air into these tanks stirring the media around. Aside from the fish, these are the most important tanks for us. The hope is that these tanks drive down ammonia and bring up our nitrate (nitrogen) count. We’ve already seen an improvement since Tuesday and we hope for continued improvement.
In other news, our new piece of equipment came in. Did you see it on Social Media? We now have a popcorn maker. Let Jeremy’s experimenting begin!
Have a great weekend and stay dry!
